Value Added Tax (VAT) still the most important tax revenue for the Confederation

Just after Easter the Federal Department of Finance published the most recent figures on the Confederation’s Tax Revenues 2014. They show that Value Added Tax (CHF 22.613 bn) brings in considerably more than the Direct Federal Tax (CHF 17.975 bn).

Impressive is also the development over the last 20 years. From less than 10 bn in the first year to 22.6 bn in its 20th year. What is also underestimated is often the importance of the Import Tax. More than half of the revenues is collected by the Federal Customs Administration.

Total consumption taxes aggregate CH 31.488 bn. Apart from the Value Added Tax the main revenue source is the Mineral Oil Tax (including surcharges) with approx. CHF 5.025 bn. and the Tobacco Tax with CHF 2.17 bn. In addition to the Import Tax, the Confederation collects almost 1 bn in import duties.

The figures confirm the global trend to an increase in indirect taxes.
